Are Internet Entertainment Good for Kids and How Students Benefit From It?

In this article we will discuss the relation between Internet entertainment and academic performance among university students. We believe that this relation is important because it suggests that students use online media to enhance their knowledge and to perform better in school. This article includes our review of research on the relation between Internet use and academic performance in undergraduate students in four disciplines (Sociology, Counseling, Education and Law). Our findings are discussed below.

As an overview, the present study sought to explore the relationship between Internet use and problem-solving skills of university students from different disciplines. The research also explored the interpersonal psychometric properties of the Turkish version of Problematic Internet Entertainment Use Scale, which focuses on major Internet entertainments like online video games, social networking sites and internet chat rooms, in relation to academic performance. Specifically, the aim of this study was to test the relation between the use of Internet resources and academic performance in students of different disciplines. Specifically, we examined the effects of using MySpace, Yahoo! 360 and other popular online social network sites on the performance of university students who are under the age of 23 years.

The present research revealed that there is a positive and significant association between the Internet use and academic performance. In particular, the analysis showed that university students who frequent social networking sites and chat rooms, especially those that engage in frequent interactive virtual adventures, perform better than their colleagues in studies that require them to engage in more structured intellectual processes. Moreover, when these same students were asked to complete tasks requiring more creative problem-solving skills, they showed better critical thinking than their colleagues. It seems that the entertainment provided by these sites somehow activates cognitive processes that promote critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

But why is it that internet use leads to such benefits? Surely the answer cannot be that simple and that everyone who uses the internet is a highly intelligent and gifted person with high IQ. Contrary to what many believe, entertainment is not all about playing computer games or enjoying broadband internet access. Social networking websites, particularly MySpace, Yahoo! 360, and Friendster, facilitate social interaction and group communication. And this, in turn, facilitates information exchange and peer development.

In essence, the social aspect of these websites encourages users to share and disseminate information. The sharing may be done either by individual users or by groups. For instance, individuals can join social communities and forums and share their personal interests, hobbies, views on a specific subject, or anything that may interest them. Alternatively, groups can be formed to discuss common interests such as movies, music, art, video games, etc. Members of groups may also use the forum to air out their views, problems, or even ask for help.

Although studies have yet to conclude the exact effects of internet entertainment on society, there are some clues that seem to point to the positive effects. For instance, one survey showed that after a night’s stay at a friend’s house using internet entertainment, those who used it compared the experience to that of going to the movies. In addition, a recent study revealed that internet users feel less stressed and are more tolerant of others’ viewpoints and opinions. Lastly, it is widely known that students who use the internet for educational purposes greatly increases their chances of doing better in school compared to those who do not use the internet for educational purposes.
